Travel is nourishment for the soul, and the soul can never get enough nourishing! If you have heard something similar to this before but aren’t understanding the importance of travelling, look no further! After reading this I bet you will look up flights, pack your bags and say ciao to all your amicas, or better yet, take them with you! When you travel, you not only gain a new perspective of life but you will explore new food, culture, people and languages. It is time for you to say See Ya to your comfort zone and expand that beautiful soul of yours.
So diving in deep with the importance of travelling, we will first start with…
NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE
In your hometown, you pretty much know everything and everyone. You wake up the same way, you say hey to Tom, Dick and Harry when you get your morning coffee and then you do whatever it is you got to do, whether that being work, taking care of the family, etc…
When you travel to a new place, your whole schedule changes. You learn about your surroundings in a whole new and fun way.
When exploring the new city or country you have travelled to, you see how other people’s way of life is completely different from your own. What is important to you could be miniscule for others.. For example, in England, having long luscious hair, the best makeup and the longest nails is a priority, but in Denmark, having the best hair, skin, and nails is pretty non existent in comparison. The beauty of having differences is that you get to reevaluate what is really important to you without the societal pressure from your home.
On another note, travelling can make you feel grateful in a whole other way than just being able to travel. When you leave your hometown, you quickly realise how good you have it. There are so many countries that do not have as many things that are available at your doorstep. For example, when I lived in the Bahamas, there were only certain times you could go to the supermarket in order to get fresh bread, fruit or even butter. In the Bahamas, you have to check every part of the food, like opening up the butter package, to make sure that it is healthy and safe to eat. Whereas in Trader Joes right next to where my mom lives in Manhattan, I don’t have to think twice. Yes it is good to make sure the expiration is up to date but that is nothing in comparison to opening up every single thing before you buy it.
Lastly, it can change your way of thinking. In the Western world, life is very much focused on keeping up with the Jones’, but in some other countries, the Jones’ don’t exist. Ever heard of the saying “less is more”? Well, I’m not just talking about foundation. Sometimes, when there are less things available to you and everyone around you, you tend to feel grateful for all the things that you do have. In some cases, just being alive is enough to make people happy. Seeing this can really put perspective into your way of thinking and just grasping the feeling that “holy shit I’m alive” brings a whole new meaning.
FOOD
Let’s be real now, food is life. Food touches on so many levels of the body and mind as it hits your taste buds, and travelling helps bring new food into your cake hole!
When home, you can order Chinese take-out, go to a sushi bar or hit up an italian restaurant, but sometimes you wonder, is this the real deal? Is this how they eat in their home countires? Well when you travel, you get to find out how and what they really eat.
When going to authentic restaurants in your hometown, you have to remember that even though some dishes may be straight up Italian or Mexican, the restaurant always has to keep in mind the culture and palette of the country they are in. When you travel to Italy , China or wherever you wish to travel, you don’t have to worry about them adjusting their culture to yours. They may suggest different dishes depending on where you are from but don’t let that stop you! Tell them you want the real deal and huzzah, you will be eating food just like the locals.
Eating in different countries always gives great innovation and dinner party ideas for when you travel back home (if you ever do!). You will gain such great inspiration and take some of your travels back home with you.
Lastly, when you have your Japanese themed dinner night with a few of your friends, you will be able to take them on a journey through your cooking and story telling of how you got around to making your new beautiful dish.
MEETING NEW PEOPLE
“A friend may be waiting behind a stranger’s face.” ― Maya Angelou. One of the great importance of travelling is meeting new people. When you meet people from other countries, not only do you gain new and fun friendships but if maintained, it is always a great excuse to go see that country again and visit your new friend! Meeting new friends from the country you are visiting allows you to see the land in a whole new light. You experience the country from the eyes of a local and that is an experience you just simply cannot buy. From things that you might have read online, you could think that you know exactly what you are going to do and see when you arrive. When you meet your new friend during your travels, you can discover new food, people and experiences that you couldn’t read online. So get out there and meet your new partner in crime!
LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE
Even though we all smile in the same language,it doesn’t mean we can buy a doughnut in the same language. Learning a new language allows you to navigate much easier and you will gain newfound respect for yourself and from the locals. When you understand the difficulty of learning something new, you appreciate tourists who come into your hometown or state and you will be able to understand the obstacles they are enduring whilst trying to immerse themselves into your culture.
A new language can also bring up new opportunities for when you reach home! If you are able to speak more than one language, so many doors open for you in terms of jobs, helping others and making new friendships.
CONCLUSION
I hope this is exactly what you were looking for when deciding if you should travel or not. Traveling is not only important for newfound knowledge, but it is important for your soul!
